Can I get a debt removed from my credit report after the Statute of Limitations has expired? How?

I live in Texas and have debts showing on my credit report that are over 5 years old, some as old as 8 years.

Can I get a debt removed from my credit report after the Statute of Limitations has expired? How?
Don't think you can do anything about it until it has been on your credit report for 10yrs now. I know thats how long they stay on after a bankruptcy has been discharged after filing. Used to be 7 but the new laws passed a few years ago changed it to 10. They cannot collect on debts that are over the statute of limitations but they can still be reported on a credit report as unpaid debt.
Reply:You are confusing two different time lines.

The statute of limitations is the time limit that creditors have to legally come after you in court and varies by State and type of debt.

The time that derogatory accounts can show on your credit is controlled by the Fair Credit Reporting Act and is 7-years from the date of fist delinquency.

This works out to be 7-years and 180-days. Any account that shows after that date can be disputed with the credit bureaus and will be removed.
Reply:Legal statutes of limitations and credit report data retention are two different things.
Reply:I check mine very year. I have depts showing up from the time i first got credit 25 years ago. Paid off of course....Home loans, car loans etc. If they are GOOD credit references then leave them.

I assume you are talking about BAD references? I think it is 7 years. It should show a date when it will be removed by year. You can not do anything to remove it unless it was not your dept and you can prove it.

I had a few that were my ex's that he got after we were legally separated, I got those removed because we were legally separated and the other person is not responsible in my state for the spouses debts made after separation. It was easy for me but not all people have it that easy.

The problem is all THREE credit reporting companies have to remove it. It is a lot of paperwork. You got a credit report so all you do is contact the supplier. The website that you got it from has a page that you use to dispute anything on your report. Try that way and see.
Reply:Yes you can just send them a dispute letter, when sending make sure you send it on a weekend this way they have less time to research it, they have only 30 days to confirm its yours.
