What do I do If I checked my credit report and there seems to be id theft?

I pulled my credit report and there are things that aren't accurate, I think I may have been part of ID theft by a relative. What am I suppose to do? Can I get a new SSN Issued and my credit restored?

Oh boy, you've got a lot of work ahead of you if you are the victim of identity theft. First and foremost contact the credit reporting agency to notify them of the inaccuracies. You can have a identify theft red flag put on your report to notify companies of the fact that you think you are the victim of identity theft (but there is a limit to how long that will remain on your report) Most importantly just identify the inaccurate items on your report and follow the reporting methods indicated on your credit report to let the agency know about it. They are required by law to investigate whether or not they are valid.

There are three credit reporting agencies in the United States. They are Equifax, Experian, and Trans-Union.

Good Luck

This site contains all the info you need, who to contact, and also has copies of sample affidavids.

The rules have changed a little bit regarding the credit reporting agencies placing flags on your credit. You will now need the affidavid, plus a police report. There are still a lot of police departments that are clueless about how to proceed with taking such a complaint. Don't let them tell you they can't file one....demand it! They will not even bother investigating it, but that doesn't matter. Without a police report you will have difficulty dealing with the creditors.

And don't waste your time with the Attorney General's office....if they even bother talking to you it will be to advise you about the above link. They don't have resources to investigate these cases. Been there, done that.
Reply:You can do that, but you should also get in touch with your state attorney general and try to press charges if possible. Either way, the attorney general's office will be able to advise you. New SSN#, close all bank accounts and replace with new bank accounts, close all credit cards and replace them, refinance all loans. This is what I had to do to eliminate theft of my money. It's a pain in the @ss, and a long process, but necessary to get your life back. Contact your bank, also. They have advisors that can help you (I'd be lost without the advisors at my bank).
Reply:You cannot get a new SSN or used an EIN number to restore your credit. This is illegal. Anyone who tells you you can is scamming you.
Reply:If any of the charges were credit card transactions you only have 120 days to initiate a chargeback through your bank to have the fund credited back to your account.

Your card number will be terminated and the merchants who accepted the card will attempt to recover the money they just lost. This is part of the chargeback process, please expect it. You will need to sign an affidavit of fraud and that will be used as proof that the charges are not yours and the merchants will have to accept the decision.

Hopefully, there is a signed receipt somewhere that will tell you who is responsible so they can be prosecuted.
Reply:You are allocated only one SSN# when you are born and it dies with you. No one gets another SSN# even if your life depends on it. That's why its important to check your credit report at least once every 4 month for any inaccuracy through different credit agency (3 of them) that you are entitled for free if you request it once a year.

Call the source for reporting inaccurate info on you and try to work with them to put it right.
