How to dispute the debts on the credit report?

i heard it is possible to dispute the debts and there is a time limit within which the collector should respond. If not, it will go off the credit report. Does anybody knows how to do that. No major debts, just unpaid phone bill from years ago, and medical bills.

How to dispute the debts on the credit report?
Go to the credit reoprt website ( just do a simple yahoo search for the agency name, there are 3 big ones) and they should have a link.

I had to print out a paper, fill it out and fax to credit agency.

They will send you and answer in about 6 weeks.

Reply:First, pull your credit report:

annualcreditreport.com is the real free site to check your credit file for free once a year.

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act you have the right to request written validation of negative entries on your credit files. Per this law they must validate the item(s) or remove them from your credit file.

Mail a letter via certified mail with return receipt to all three credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion %26amp; Experian). Include a photocopy of your driver's license and social security card...If you don't include these, they may write back requesting them, which would slow the process down by several weeks. In your letter, simply state:

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I am requesting written validation of this item.

--------------------------------------...

Do this one at a time for each negative entry....DO NOT request validation for all items at one time.
Reply:If there are errors on your credit report, you can file a dispute with the credit bureau. You really don't need to send certified letters the first go round. Frequently, errors are fixed on the first notification.

If these are legit derogatory items, don't waste your time doing mass disputes. The credit bureaus will tag you and you will have problems getting errors removed in the future. Even if you do manage to get a few of these derogatories removed, they are likely to return when the creditor next updates.

Instead, you should work on negotiating delete for pay agreements with the creditors. Send the collection agency an offer to pay $x (make it half the balance) if they will remove the item from your credit file. Ask that an authorized ageny sign and return a copy of your letter to indicate acceptance of your offer. When you get the signed copy, send them a money order.

If you do nothing, derogatory items age off your credit file 7-1/2 years from the date of first deficiency.
