How should I handle a error on credit report?

On my credit report there is a collections account open that is unpaid of about $100 almost 2 years ago. It is an error and I have the cleared check to prove it. But I was told that if I dispute it and it is removed that the credit score will decrease? Is this true?

How should I handle a error on credit report?
No, that isn't true. The opposite is true. If you don't dispute the error, you will have a record of an unpaid collection on your credit history, and that will clobber your credit score.

Dispute the error with the credit bureau and the bill collector. A lot of bill collectors walk a fine line between legal and illegal conduct. Check with your state's Attorney General under the topic "bill collectors" and find out your rights just in case the bill collector doesn't play fair.

The credit bureau has 30 days to clear up the error. If you have to prove it's an error, be sure to only send copies and not originals of any supporting evidence you have. And, send your correspondence by certified mail.
Reply:Contact the business that reported you and ask them to correct it. If they won't write the three credit agencies.

Zero is normally better then Negative- so it is probably best to have it removed. ;)

Even if you have it removed, I'm sure you have other items on your credit report to provide businesses with some positive history
Reply:Contact one of the credit reporting agencies (equifax for example). Write them a letter stating that there is something on your credit report that should not be there and what can you get it done to get it fixed. Also copy and send your proof to them. I hope this helps and good luck!
