How long do things stay on your credit report?

If the Statute of Limitations has expired, how long can the 'bill' (wasn't paid, it was disputed and never heard from again) remain on a persons credit report? Is there any way to get it off? Thanks in advance.

How long do things stay on your credit report?
The Fair Credit Reporting Act states that derogatory accounts show for 7-years from the date of first delinquency which works out to 7-years and 180-days.

The S.O.L. has nothing to do with the time that the account can be reported and no there is no way to remove accurate information before this time has passed.

That's why it's called credit history.

Reply:I want to say 7-10 years. It's not something that should be taken lightly though. This is the type of thing that can stay with you. My dad's aunt and uncle went bankrupt and i think were forclosed upon back in the 70s and they still pay cash for everything since their credit is so bad.
